Hairy phlox in bloom, Colbert County, AL, April 2014
Hairy phlox is a specialized plant desiring basic conditions, known as a "glade" in Alabama. There are hairy bracts below a smooth calyx. Note the hairy stem, although this alone is not distinctive of this species.
