Ailanthus altissima, Tree of Heaven Family Simaroubaceae ![]() Seed pods of Tree of Heaven, Manistee County, MI, February, 2014 Ailanthus is dioecious, with male and female trees. The brown dots are remnants of the flower, and the seed is centered in the middle of a twisted pod, each pod being about two inches long. The tree was planted as an ornamental and street-scaping tree in the 1800s, but quickly became unpopular due to prolific suckering and its bad odor. Alien, from China, and now considered a weed tree. |
