Tree of Heaven
Tree of Heaven branching, Mason County, MI, October, 2013
Ailanthus leaves are compound with 11-41 leaflets on each stem. The ends of the branches on large trees curve upward, which is more noticeable when the leaves have fallen. The tree was planted as an ornamental and street-scaping tree in the 1800s, but quickly became unpopular due to prolific suckering and its bad odor. Alien, from China, and now considered a weed tree.
