Bark of mature quaking aspen, Mason County, MI, April, 2014
Quaking aspen are brittle trees, rarely getting larger than 8-10 inches in diameter. Mature bark is smooth and light gray with black lines, causing it to be occasionally mistaken for white birch. However, the twigs of birch are smooth and brown, while aspen are gray and bumpy.
