Virginia spring beauty

Flower of Virginia beauty, Mason County, MI, April 2010
This small pink spring flower, about 3 inches high, carpets the forest floor, early, before leaves create shade. In warm sun they give off a sweet odor. Formerly in Portulacaceae. Virginia spring beauty has very narrow leaves while Carolina spring beauty has wider leaves. Wide leaf in this photo is from a trout lily.
