Mayapple

Family Berberidaceae
mayapple, umbrella plant, hog apple

mayapple growth habit, Seneca County, NY, May 2010
Note the large leaves, with each of the palmate leaflets looking something like a duck's foot. The Genus, Podophyllum, translates to "foot leaf." It usually grows in patches like this scattered through the woods. Each patch is a root clone.
