Family Colubridae
Northern water snake

baby Northern water snake, Mason County, MI, April, 2015
Northern water snakes are non-poisonous. Baby ones are more highly patterned than adults which may look almost plain black, or have faint patterns. Note the alternating dark and light bands. Although they spend almost all of the time in the water, they will come out to sun themselves, even climbing in trees.
